Triple R community radio
The Chief Scientist was interviewed on Melbourne community radio station Triple R’s weekly science program, Einstein A Go-Go.
Professor Chubb spoke with presenters Dr Shane and Dr Lauren about how science in Australia ranks against other countries and some of the challenges faced by the scientific community.
“I think our best scientists are easily up there with the best in the world. We have a substantial share of the best and most cited publications, which is one measure, and I think that’s something of which we can be very proud,” Professor Chubb said.
“Our average perhaps isn’t where I’d like it to be. I think if you compare us with the best countries in the world, because comparing us with the whole world just drops the bar too low, if you compare us with the best countries in the world we sit behind countries like Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and Denmark, if you look at citations, which is just one measure. No measure is perfect, but it’s a good indication of where we sit. I think we could do better than that if we were a bit more strategic about it.”
You can listen to the full program on the Triple R website. Professor Chubb’s interview starts at the 16:00 mark.
