The Finkel Files: a compilation of speeches from Australia's Chief Scientist
The Finkel Files: Selected speeches from Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel AO, has been published online.
The publication comprises 47 speeches that had the greatest impact with audiences, selected from over 700 public engagements that Dr Finkel delivered during his five year term from January 2016 to December 2020. Each speech is introduced with a written reflection penned by the Chief Scientist, along with selected photographs and new, original artwork.
"Speeches have been my chief means of communication during my five‑year term as Australia’s Chief Scientist, and I have used them to convey my immense enthusiasm for science and mathematics, technology and innovation," Dr Finkel said.
The selection of speeches represents the breadth of the major tasks Dr Finkel was engaged in such as innovation, education, research and energy issues, and expresses his boundless optimism about the scientific disciplines.
The volume also includes a preface by the Prime Minister, The Hon Scott Morrison MP, in which he praises the speeches as being full of well-argued, insightful ideas, and notes Dr Finkel’s love of language.
"By turns thought-provoking, inspiring and whimsical, these speeches reflect Dr Finkel’s bold aspirations for Australia and his unswerving belief in the power of science to improve lives," wrote Mr Morrison.
