Profile in the AFR

The Australian Financial Review has published a profile of the Chief Scientist by associate editor Anne Hyland.

In the interview, Professor Chubb discusses national science policy, the need to support and empower Australian teachers, and plans for his upcoming retirement.

Chubb is a trained neuroscientist and has held leadership positions across four of Australia’s universities. In his current role, he developed the nation’s science strategy, and has helped shape the federal government’s science policy. Until last year, Australia was the only OECD nation without a strategy in science and technology. It’s been a significant achievement for Chubb, who has arguably accomplished more than many of his predecessors in the role.

Chubb, who radiates a genial warmth and has a calm and considered demeanour, has dramatically lifted the profile of science nationally after taking up the role in April 2011. He’s kept up a frenetic pace of delivering 100 speeches each year in a 40-week working period – that’s two to three speeches a week across the nation.
