Professor Chubb was interviewed by Patricia Karvelas on ABC Radio National’s Drive program about industry placements for science and ICT students.
A new occasional paper released by the Office of the Chief Scientist found that only one in seven undergraduate students in the natural and physical sciences participates in an industry placement, while just three in 100 participate in a longer term placement.
“It’s important for all students to get that insight into how work works and how they can use their knowledge, skills, talents and discipline knowledge and apply them in the workplace,” Professor Chubb said.
“Employers often complain that graduates are not work-ready. Don’t they have some obligation to try to work with the universities to help get them to be work-ready? I would argue that they do.”
